Greece’s capital and its largest city, Athens is home to the world’s most famous ancient site, the Acropolis. This city, recently spiffed up for the 2004 Olympics, has much more to offer including bustling outdoor cafes, a lively nightlife, a unique blend of Western and Middle Eastern cultures, and newly pedestrianized streets that wind through its ancient sites.
The number of those sites is extraordinary. Start experiencing the “Glory that was Greece” at the Acropolis where the Parthenon, built 2,500 years ago, continues to amaze. Also be sure to take in the Agora, a grand ruined Roman building; the Temple of Zeus, 1,500 years old; Hadrian’s Arch, the former city gate, and the Dionysos Theatre. For a different experience wander through Plaka, the old town on the slopes of the Acropolis, to discover an old church or ancient monument you might otherwise have missed.
