You may want to hold off on travel to Thailand, as the government is currently in crisis. Although Thailand is a very beautiful country, there are many forms of abuse that occur there. One Is human trafficking for sex, which is very prevalent and victimizes very young children. The Thai people in general are very respectful and polite, but do not revere animals as do people here in the U.S.

One does see some stray animals in BKK, but not an unusually high number. As Marina indicated, many Thai people do not care for animals the way we do, but I have not noted cruelty. I have observed some rather scrawny looking street dogs. On the other hand, I have also seen many well cared for Thai pets. Some other countries like China are far worse when it comes to cruelty to animals including raising dogs to sell as food. Concerning the current situation in Thailand, the Army declared martial law a few days ago. This was not a coup (though there have been many coups in Thailand since the absolute monarchy ended in the early 30's). Personally, I think this action may reduce the tension in the Country.

Thank you for your responses. I think it might be dangerous to travel to Thailand right now. Australia and New Zealand just put a high security alert on travel there. That is their HIGHEST alert. As far as stray animals go, I read and heard that many of the elephants in various camps have been abused. They were beaten in order to lose their spirit, so people can ride on them. I also heard they're chained up 23 hours a day. One person wrote that when you leave the big cities you see cats in cages left to starve to death. The cages are hidden behind trees. Also, elephants tied up so they don't eat the crops. They also are starved. I know someone who helped out at the Tiger Temple. There he said the tigers are tied up ALL day EVERY day. People come up to them. Some people say they are drugged. That part might be a speculation. But, having them tied up all day ever day is true.
