This city’s zocalo, or central plaza, contains the remains of an Aztec pyramid, a colonial church, and a sleek modern office building. Mexico City is filled with a vibrant melding of fascinating history, proud culture and urban energy. This is the oldest metropolis on the American continent, founded more than 675 years ago as the capital of the Aztec Empire.

Today Mexico City, located in a highland valley at more than 7,300 feet above sea level, has some 22 million residents making it one of the planet’s most populated cities. San Jacinto Plaza

San Jacinto Plaza is in the San Angel district and is the town square. There are a number of arts and crafts shopping centers located here as well as a park and some restaurants. The plaza has had various names such as La Placita, La Plaza and La Plaza de los Largartos (plaza of the alligators). Artists gather at this square to display and sell their wares.

Central University City Campus

Central University City Campus This site is listed as a National Artistic Monument. These areas are heritage conservation zones. The collection of buildings, sports facilities and open spaces was built from 1949 to 1952. It was accomplished by more than 60 architects, engineers and artists. The campus is a unique example of 20th century modernism, integrating urbanism, architecture, engineering, landscape design and fine arts. It has references to local traditions especially to Mexico’s pre-Hispanic past. It is one of the most significant modern icons in Latin America.

Plaza de las Tres Culturas

Plaza de las Tres Culturas This is the square of the three cultures. It refers to the fact that there have been three periods of Mexican History here; pre-Columbian, Spanish colonial and the independent “Mestizo” nation. The square has the remains of an Aztec Temple that is flanked by a Catholic Church. There is also a huge housing complex off the square. The square of the three cultures is the main square within the Tlatelolco neighborhood of Mexico City. On the southern edge of the square stands the former headquarters of the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs. The headquarters have been turned into a memorial museum to remember the 1968 Mexican student demonstrations and the Tlateloco Massacre victims and survivors.

Zocalo

Zocalo The Zocalo, otherwise known as the Plaza de la Constitucion, once the heart of Aztec Tecochitilan is second in area only to Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and Moscow’s Red square. The significance of the square is that Zocalo is the city’s political and religious center. It gets its name from part of a monument to independence. General Santa Anna planned this monument in the 1840’s. The plans went astray and only the statues base was ever erected and even that is gone now. When you visit the square you can often see pre-Hispanic enactor groups dancing and pounding drums and in the evening the square fills with street musicians.

Xochimilco

Attraction

Xochimilco is about 56 miles south of the center of Mexico City and has a network of canals and artificial islands. The canals were built for irrigation and transportation. Visitors can take a trip on wooden boats trimmed with beautiful fresh flowers. The 30 miles of navigable waterways are lined with vendors selling their wares and delicacies and groups of mariachi or marimba will serenade you from wooden boats. Xochimilco means flower field place and this is a World Heritage Site.
