As the nickname ‘Mile High City’ would suggest, Denver, Colorado sits at exactly 5,280 feet above sea level while wedged in between the majestic Rocky Mountains and Great Plains. As the capital of Colorado, Denver is the largest city in Middle America and boasts a blend of cosmopolitan appeal and slow-paced country charms.
Denver is part Old West and part Modern West. Historic downtown buildings rub shoulders with soaring skyscrapers and Buffalo Bill-style saloons can be found amongst the trendy bars and award winning micro-breweries in town. Miles of on and off-road bike and hike trails, city parks and the surrounding Rockies give way to major museums, the Red Rocks amphitheater and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. As the largest shopping city within a 600 mile radius, Denver offers everything from the galleries, boutiques and antique shops of historic Latimer Square, to the friendly 16th Street Mall, Talbot Center and Denver Pavilions. In additions to the arts, culture and retail therapy that can be found in the city; it’s also a huge sports town. With professional league teams in baseball, football, hockey, soccer and basketball; Denver is known to offer big league excitement.
Ever since the days of the gold rushing Wild West; Denver has been a town known to deliver a fantastic steak. Not only can diners choose from a prime selection of ribeye, porterhouse, t-bone or filet, but authentic Western cuisine like bison, elk and even Rocky Mountain Oysters are local favorites. Denver is also an up-and-comer in the international culinary scene. Fusion food is taking the town by storm, and innovative, chef-owned restaurants are sprouting up serving everything from traditional Pacific Rim cuisine, to Japanese, Mexican and everything in between.
Denver International Airport (DEN) is located 24 miles east of downtown and is the region’s most widely used domestic and international airport. Transportation from the airport to the city includes Skyride buses that make several stops in the metro area, as well as the Supershuttle Denver, which departs every 15-30 minutes. For getting around the city, Denver has a network of buses and light rails that run through the Regional Transportation District. In addition to taxis and rental cars, biking is also prevalent downtown, as there is a vast cycling culture within the city.
Denver has a semi-arid continental climate, with four distinct seasons. Though the city is located on the Great Plains, the weather of the area is highly influenced by the proximity to the Rocky Mountains. Winter can range from mild to cold, and although large amounts of snow tend to fall to the west; the city itself doesn’t not get hit as hard (November has the highest snowfall totals). The coldest month of January can see average low temperatures of 15.2° F (-9.33° C), while the warmest month of July can see temps rise into the upper 80’s. With something to offer every traveler, Denver is a year-round destination and should be visited in any season.
