Maine

From coastal villages to the second-most-visited National Park, Maine has much offer those who venture there. Maine is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast, New Hampshire to the southwest, and the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the northwest and New Brunswick to the northeast. Maine is the northernmost portion of the region and is the country's easternmost state. It’s characterized by its jagged, mostly rocky coastline; its low, rolling mountains; its heavily forested interior; and its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams.

Maine is divided into eight distinct tourism regions, each offering unique activities, events and accommodations. The state boasts 6,000 lakes, 32,000 miles of rivers, 5,000 miles of coast and 17 million acres of forest.

A drive up the Maine coast will take you through the state’ largest city, Portland, to explore its historic neighborhoods and its Old Port, up to spectacular Acadia National Park. Acadia encompasses over 47,000 acres of mountains, woodlands, lakes and ponds, and ocean shoreline. Drive its scenic Loop Road for amazing views. Along the way up to Acadia are delightful coastal towns. Other highlights in Maine include shopping in Freeport (home of L.L. Bean), the Portland lighthouse and the sea, whether you decide to feast on its catch or go for a sail.

Lobsters from Maine are world famous and are featured on the menus in many Maine restaurants. Seafood restaurants dot the coastline and provide food so fresh, it probably came from the ocean just a few hours earlier. A meal at a Maine diner can come with home-cooked chowders, muffins and blueberry pies.

Maine receives passenger jet service at its two largest airports, the Portland International Jetport and the Bangor International Airport. Both are served daily by many major airlines to destinations all over the country. Essential Air Service also subsidizes service to a number of smaller airports in Maine, such as the Augusta State Airport, Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, Knox County Regional Airport and the Northern Maine Regional Airport at Presque Isle.
And while Maine sits the edge of the U.S., it’s well connected. Interstate 95 runs through Maine, as well as its easterly branch I-295. 
Maine experiences warm (although generally not hot), humid summers. Winters are cold and snowy throughout the state, and are especially severe in the northern parts of Maine. Coastal areas are moderated somewhat by the Atlantic Ocean. Daytime highs are generally in the 75° to 80° F. range throughout the state in July. January temperatures range from highs near 32° F. on the southern coast to overnight lows below 0° F. in the far north.
