Kansas City, Missouri, blends old and new, city and prairie. It's often been called the "City of Fountains" since it boasts more outdoor water features than any other city, Rome excepted. Music flows freely, too, especially in the form of jazz. That legacy can still be heard at the famous 18th & Vine Historic District or at City Market. Architecture, including its many examples of art deco styling, is another of Kansas City’s many claims to fame.
If sports are your passion, you can experience NASCAR® speed at the Kansas Speedway or root for the Kansas City T-Bones minor league baseball team, or the Kansas City Wizards Major League Soccer team. You can get behind the wheel yourself at one of Kansas Speedway’s driving schools or golf at one of three challenging golf courses. Sports fans also can get in the game at the new College Basketball Experience, which features interactive exhibits and a hoops hall of fame.
You can experience the rich cultural diversity of the city through annual festivals and community events. The Renaissance Festival, rated among the Top 100 events in North America, transports visitors to Medieval times for seven weekends each fall. Among Kansas City’s newest family attractions is Schlitterbahn Vacation Village Waterpark. And, kids can’t get enough of Science City, a hands-on children’s museum at Union Station. In Overland Park, Deanna Rose Farmstead revisits the age of the family farm. Thrill-seekers of all ages will love the side-by-side theme parks, Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun. At the Kansas City Zoo, you’ll find more than 1,200 exotic animals. For interactive family fun, you can get behind the wheel of a high-performance cart that reaches speeds of up to 45 mph at Sadlers Indoor Racing; ride the bumper cars and go-carts at Paradise Park; or, play a game that’s a combination of bumper cars, basketball and jai alai — called “whirly ball” — at PowerPlay. For adults, the city’s four casinos offer traditional gaming, dining and amazing live entertainment. Boulevard Brewing Co. offers a taste of how specialty beer is made, with tours of its modern production facility.
Barbecue may be Kansas City’s signature food, but the dining scene here embodies the city’s many cultural influences, ranging from indigenous cuisines and home-style cooking, to a wide range of fusion foods. Downtown Kansas City has more than 200 restaurants and nearly every genre of food imaginable. The new Kansas City Power & Light District is home to a diverse mix of restaurants and nightlife, from an authentic Irish pub to a locally owned gourmet burger joint.
